this morning, a dreadful thing happened. one of the ten new golfish that i bought died. unlike the previous time, i did not call the police to issue us a death certificate. instead, my maid said that she ate it cos it was very fresh. *gulp* sigh. i hope the rest of the nine goldfish wouldnt die so soon. not until they're in their twilight years. not till they're fat and heavy. my goldfish are quite shy little things. they dont even dare to swim to the surface to eat. they've to wait till the food sinks to the bottom of the pot before they eat. if not, they're contented just sucking up the algae at the bottom and sides of the pot. maybe i'm too scary. you know, like a giant. but according to the goldfish owner's manual, they need some getting used to. so that should be the reason. not as if i'm a monster right. har. oh ya, i also learnt that when the water needs changing, we should only siphon out 30 percent of the water. also, before putting in the water, it should be left overnight so that the chlorine would evaporate. i think all my goldfish and class guppies died of chlorine poisoning. sad eh. no wonder all our guppies jumped out of the tank when we filled it with tap water. initially we thought the water temperature wasnt right. but now i know. this is called experience, and we should learnt form it. under my hands, many fishes died. form guppies to goldfish and even longkang fish. poor little things.
this morning i found a tiny water snail in my goldfish pot. therefore, i can conclude that it is the one who ate the leaves of the water hycinth and water lettuce. but at least i got rid of you, you idiot! i hope you dry and die out in the sun, although it's quite gloomy today. i really really hate snails. they're like phlegm that moves on their own. totally gross. i mentioned this before. when you pour salt onto them, they foam, and eventually wither and die. sometimes their flesh becomes liquid and you can literally pour them out. scientifically, the reason why they seem to foam is due to osmosis. unlike our skin, their skin acts as a semi permeable membrane. the addition of salt changes the osmotic balance across the membrane. as the salt content in the snail is lower than the concentration of salt poured onto it, the water concentration is higher. and since osmosis occurs when water moves from an area of higher concentration to that of a lower one, water rushes out of the snail's cells to make things equal. hence, the snail dehydrates and soon, withers off and dies. this is why they look as if the're foaming. poor things right. but who cares. they're snail and pests anyway. and i hate them. just a few days ago i saw a couple of them being squashed by a vehicle in a carpark. haha. serves them right.
