i'm getting used to my new maid already. her name's yanti. a very petite young woman she is, standing at only 145cm. she cant reach the top shelf! oh boy. i'm about 24-25cm taller than her. and i cant believe the fact that she claims to be 23 years old. hah. but she's very cute. she uses a mickey mouse toiletry bag, and a mickey mouse towel. she's a person with modern dress sense, coming here with a pair of blue canvas shoes and white and blue shoe laces. 'yes ma'm' and thank you ma'm' are the main words in her english vocabulary. it's ok. i'll train her and by the time her contract ends, she'd know how to speak english that is of course, peppered with some singlish as well. last time yati knew what 'mai ani kwan' was. meaning 'dont like that', in terribly broken english. she also knew when to use 'words' like 'lah' or 'meh', and even included them when talking to her sister in bahasa indonesia. so you see the power of singlish.
now i've got to get used to the extreme cleanliness of my house and the extreme neatness of my desk. these are just not me. okay, maybe the clean part, yes, but the neat part, NO! with a capital N and a capital O! at least it motivates me to continue to keep my desk tidy. i feel bad making such a small person do so much work, although she's not obliged to do it. talk about my whole house!
actually i think this extreme cleanliness thing would only last, say, one or two months. the first time a maid comes, she'd do her very best to please her employers. first impression counts. but soon, as they get more familiar with the household and such, they would slowly slacken off. she'll find short cuts or easy way outs in doing stuff. maybe like ironing two shirts at a time etc. heh. soon, she'd start to make friends with the neighbourhood maids and get all the latest gossips about their employers. this is when we should be vigilant and take notice of what we do. indeed, there is no privacy at all. people say that with an internet connection, there's no privacy for anyone as the government can easily track us down. however, even without an internet connection, we still, have no privacy, cos we have maids. the neighbours would soon know what time we wake up in the morning and other queer habits of ours, and vice versa.
maids, maids, maids. sometimes we just can't do without them. or can we?
