okay. i've given it much thought. due to the fact that my birthday is coming soon, on the 27th of may, i've decided to write a list of the things i want, so that it would assist you in your decision making. what decision you make is important, so maybe you could do with some help. here's it.
1. a big box of GOOD QUALITY coloured pencils. most preferably faber castell or lyra. good quality means that the lead would not break when dropped or when sharpened. the lead should be soft when colouring and should not feel waxy or produce 'dust' when colouring.
2. GOOD QUALITY coloured markers, and black markers of different sizes [005, 01,02, 03,05,06,08]. good quality means the ink would not dry so quickly, and the tip of the markers should not become blunt after much usage. for the coloured markers, the colour shouldnt fade or change over time. black markers shouldnt turn brown, and should be able to write on plastic surfaces.
3. guitar strap
4. electone
5. a new bag
6. berms
alright. so here they are. five simple things. remember, my birthday's on the twenty seventh day of the fifth month. or just 27 of may la. hee.
i just read andrea's blog about maids and that reminded me that my maid's going home already. i'm so sad. i've got no one to talk to for the next month or so before my school starts. yes, there willl be a new maid, but it still wont change the fact that my dear yati is gone. sigh. i hope the new maid's good. sigh, again. sigh. i hope sunday doesnt come so fast.
by the way, i just heard from my maid that my neighbour's maid got abused. it is said that her ma'am slaps her face and denies her of food. two of her employer's younger children also beat and slap her. actually i'm not really surprised because they're indians and can be very authoritative, especially when they're high in the ranks. maybe they still believe that they're in india's caste system [in the singapore context], which still exists today. maybe she thinks that because her husband's a laywer, she's in the brahman, which is the highest level of the caste system. the maid, i guess is a srilankan indian. to think that she abused someone her own race is really out of this world. my goodness. if she were a chinese, it would be understandable if it's discrimination. however, in this case, she seems to be discriminating her own race!! anyhow, discrimination is both morally and socially wrong. what has become of the world?!?!?!?!
switzerland sets an example for us. switzerland, like singapore, is a multi racial country, with german, french, spanish etc speaking people. we should respect the minority groups by compromising and accomodating. the majority speaking group favours the minority. take the german speaking cantons for example. they have subsidised french schools. in other words, the german speaking canton allows more money to be spent on french schools. this plays a huge part in the peace and harmony in switzerland.
oh my, i studied too hard for social studies. although many students think that it's a chore studying for social studies, i, however beg to differ. instead, i feel that it's very relevant and i enjoy it. in fact, it's the easiest subject. it teaches youths to be more aware of the world around us, trains us to be more analytical and makes us more socially upright people. we learnt that fighting is not good for us, from the case of the the LTTE[liberation of tamil tigers elam] and the sinhalese. we learnt that respect and tolerance is vital in a small multi racial country like singapore, in the topic about switzerland. we learnt why the government is putting in so much effort in our education and why we're learning what we're learning, in the topic of the education in singapore. we learnt to appreciate our high standards of living here, through the topic of housing, as compared to the situation in hongkong. etc etc.
in another perspective, some students think that social studies is also a big huge government propaganda. let me elaborate a little, but not too much. for example, take the topic on public housing. it shows the transformation of public housing since the times when people were living in slums and squatters till the time the first hdb flats were built in toapayoh[i think]. people might think that the government wants to promote themselves whatsoever, but nothing can deny the fact that they've already done a good job. i can daringly say that 90+% of singaporeans have a roof over their heads. at precisely 7pm, the street lamps in my estate would be turned on. the drainge systems all over the country are well planned and maintained. do you smell sewage? look at the roads. are they dirt tracks? no! imagine..just fifty over years ago, none of these were in place, or at least in proper working condition. so i dont see the need of the government promoting themselves. you can see it all through their implementations and schemes. now the government's upgrading every hdb block. even though i dont live in a flat, i still think they're doin a great job. imagine again, the amount of planning the have to go through. there are thousands of hdb blocks! of course there are glitches here and there, but it's obvious that their merits certainly outweigh their demerits. [this phrase is used wrongly, but you should know what i mean]. i'm definitely voting for the people's action party. they really take action. fast.
okay. i shall end here. remember, my birthday is on the 27th of may. have a good day and i hope you had a good read, although every paagraph talks about different things.
